My group of three went by this small cafe on a Thursday afternoon during the lunch rush. There was not a large dine-in crowd but the To Go business was bustling. The area is reinventing itself and undergoing a great deal of construction, the workers in the area have obviously found this spot to be the choice for lunch. This looks to be an old bakery and we could see a large brick oven in the kitchen area. Our service was pleasant and fast. After seeing the oven we order a large bacon, sausage, and onion pizza as an appetizer. I had the half turkey club and half chili special. The fellas each had big bacon cheese burgers. The pizza was fully covered with toppings and cheese, nothing skimpy. The turkey club was oven baked and crisp with the LTO and mayo put on after baking. The guys liked their burgers and slaw. Three meals, drinks and a great waitress cost us around $40. Despite the neighborhood, I'd certainly return.

This cafe is a diamond in the rough. My wife and I wandered in here off the highway while driving across the state. We were immediately welcomed by the staff and soon learned that the cafe was run entirely by one family. Our food was quick to be made and really delicious, a fresh pizza with crispy cracker crust that was totally satisfying. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants some quick, delicious American cuisine! Just a note, they only take cash, but if you don't arrive prepared, there's a gas station nearby with an atm.

We were up in North City, drove past this place, and decided to check it out for lunch. Cornerstone is an unexpected gem -- a cute, bright restaurant with homey touches and very reasonably priced basic fare. Family run and it feels like it. I had the special, meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans. Cash only!

Was pleasantly surprised by Cornerstone Cafe today. I'd been by it, seen the signage, but never stopped in to eat. The service was great and quite friendly. My dining companion and I were both happy with our meals. Simple fare that's prepared well and reasonably priced. What more could you ask for?

I've only had take out from here, as we always ordered work lunches from this great place. Everything was always yummy with that home-made edge. Do yourself a favor and order the taco soup. It is delicious on it's own but then they top it with sour cream, cheese and chips. They graciously shared the recipe and when I lost it, the"mom" ( forgetting her name at the moment) gave it to me with her technique. She is just the sweetest, generous lady! Alas mine isn't quite as good as hers. Had no idea the place was so cute, have to make a visit!

The owners are nice but the atmosphere could be better. Very small menu and most of the food is average. The prices are cheap. Often there is a baby being held by one of the owners while ringing people up or taking your order. Everyone can hear you at your table. Tables are very close together. For some reason it always appears like the family is stressed out. Running around like chicken's with their heads cut off and talking to their customers as they do their jobs. I used to go here all the time, because they are close to where I work, but have stopped going because it just is not relaxing or comfortable.

I tend to write reviews as close to the conclusion of my meal as possible. So it comes to no surprise that my belly is full of food from the lovely Cornerstone Cafe as I write this. I work pretty close to Cornerstone, so I thought I'd give it a try. It's in the North City neighborhood, right across from Hyde Park. In all honesty, the neighborhood isn't the safest, and I wouldn't want to walk here alone after dark, but during the day it seemed to be perfectly fine. Anyway, the food was pretty good. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and french fries. Both were pretty good, and you really can't beat the price; I paid less than 5 bucks for my meal! The service was very very friendly. I immediately felt at home when I walked through the door. Like the previous reviewer said, this won't be the best food you've had in your life, but it's pretty damn good. I'll probably be back, just because it's ridiculously close to where I work.

It's no wonder that the owners of Cornerstone hail from Red Bud, Illinois, because the place brings that small town main street vibe to Hyde Park. The cuisine is good basic fare. They have sandwiches, wings, small homemade thin crust pizzas, and salads. I'm a fan of the veggie pizza and the loaded baked potato. Meat eaters tell me that the burgers are unbeatable for the price, and that the crunchy chicken salad is also delicious. The meal you eat at Cornerstone might not be the single most amazing food you eat in your life, but it's hard to find anything comparable at their amazingly low prices. I have scrounged dollar bills and change out of my pocket money jar, walked up the street, and eaten a very satisfying meal here. What makes Cornerstone particularly special is the family vibe--it's owned and operated by a small town Illinois family, and if you eat there two or three times, you will be part of the family, too. It's not uncommon to find a bunch of neighbors huddled around a jigsaw puzzle atop a table, or to find the daughters who are the waitresses at the place engaged in a game of Scrabble (and they will--charmingly--ask you what word will be spelled with three Es when the other one gets up to go to the bathroom). The mom or one of the daughters will often have something baking when you visit, be it oatmeal cookies or pineapple upside-down cake--be sure to ask about this, because their hot-out-of-the-oven desserts are a delight. The decor is cute, as well--mismatched 1950s chrome-edged formica tables make up the dining room, and the bathroom has a collaged wall covered in clipped advertisements also of a midcentury vintage. Heads up, it's cash only. They do deliver, and also take pick-up orders via phone.
